Soccer World Cup 2010
Information and accommodation that will help make your 2010 trip to South Africa memorable.

You will need a home-base during your visit

World Cup soccer enthusiasts around the world are known to plan their trips well ahead of time.

We at the Coral Tree Inn are eager to assist with information and highlight some facts that can play an important role in your plans, especially if it's your first visit to South Africa.

In a country like ours with its developing economy and the huge distances, it is going to be practical, maybe even necessary to choose a home-base and make your trips to games in other centres by air and then return to home-base.

We believe our three guest houses:
  • Coral Tree Inn
  • Wild Peach Inn
  • Hibiscus Inn
are all ideally situated to provide you with a home-base during the tournament.

For games that are played in Capetown, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein and Durban we offer easy access to OR Tambo International Airport and a shuttle service subject to early booking. Two Gautrain stations are within easy reach of our guesthouses, as well as a good network of highways for those who prefer to hire a car or go by coach to, say Soccer City in Soweto. This is where the purpose-built stadium called the Calabash, not unlike in design to the Bird's Nest of the Beijing 2008 Olympics, can accommodate more than 87,000 fans.

What is a Calabash?

Calabash is a pumpkin or gourd that is known in many cultures for its use as a sturdy container. There are records of it in Mexico and even in ancient Egyptian tombs dating back to 3000BC. In Africa it is a traditional drinking vessel with which individuals share milk and hospitality. The San people of South Africa used it to store water in to sustain them during long periods without water.

In 2010 the calabash gives its name to the largest soccer stadium on the continent and the principal stadium for the 2010 Soccer World Cup where the opening match and the final of the tournament will be played in Soccer City, Soweto.
